Target Water
One dripping tap can waste 2,000 litres of water per month. Over one year this is equivalent to 28,000 glasses of water.
Each year, local businesses use vast amounts of water daily on essentials like production, catering and bathrooms. The chances that you are using more water than you need to are high. You could reduce this amount with minimal investment. This would not only achieve cost savings, but also reduce your water consumption.
Target Water - What's in it for you?
- Achieve cost savings from reduced water usage
- Create a competitive advantage – make your business a leader in sustainable business practice
- Take pride in working for an environmentally conscious business
Target Water - What's in it for the Environment?
- Without a reduction in water use Christchurch City may require an additional source of water in less than 20 years time to meet the demand on the water supply system.
Calculate your Water Consumption
The first step to water efficiency is to understand the amount of water used at your premises. Find your water meter and start by recording your daily, weekly, and monthly water usage.
It is advisable to do this before you set up your water efficiency programme, because this will give you a baseline to measure your progress against.
Water Audit
Look for areas where water can be saved, particularly from taps, water cisterns, urinals, hoses and drinking fountains. Significant reductions in water consumption can be achieved by installing water efficient appliances and fittings.
Get Started Today!
Very easy
- Find and fix leaks
- Wait until there is a full load to use the dishwasher
- Install a 'toilet dam' if you do not have a dual flush cistern. (Fill a 1.5L plastic bottle with water and place this inside the cistern. This reduces the amount of water needed to fill the cistern)
- Use the garden irrigation system only when necessary and water in the early morning or evenings to reduce evaporation
Easy
- Reduce flow speed of taps by attaching a water saving nozzle
- Plant native plants - they are more likely to require less watering
Long-term
- Install water efficient appliances and fittings
- Install a rain water collection tank to collect water for irrigation and/or toilet use
